Audio Production and Editing

I managed the American Planning Association's podcast for nearly four years. In that time, I:

  • Increased the number of annual episodes by 40 percent from 2017 to 2018; maintained the new output until my departure.

  • Developed external communication templates (pre-recording introductory email; day-of-recording scripts and checklist; follow-up emails) and internal communication templates (in-office recording reminders, episode-publication announcements).

  • Gathered and reported on analytics; crafted strategy documents based on insights and presented them to senior stakeholders for consideration.

In other words, I took the podcast from what it was — a channel that was updated on a perfunctory basis, that wasn't optimized for SEO, offering episodes that didn't experiment with structure or sound — and turned it into a dynamic, well-oiled program. I contributed to the podcast's strategy along with several other colleagues, but I also reviewed analytics, drew conclusions from the data, and proactively offered new strategic plans for the team's consideration.

TikTok's TalkingCities Makes Urban Planning Fast and Easy to Grasp

After researching social media influencers working in the urban planning space, I identified the creator of the TalkingCities account as someone who was aligned with APA's brand, had a sizable following, and would likely promote the episode through his channels if he were to be a guest on the APA Podcast. My instincts proved correct, and after it aired, the episode became the best performing podcast episode of the podcast's history. Listen now.

The Compton's Transgender Cultural District

In 2019, I conceived of and pitched to several senior managers a multiphase content project — an hour-long, narrative-driven podcast episode — that would fill multiple content gaps across many channels. With a colleague from APA's magazine, I researched, interviewed guests, and scripted the episode, but I performed all audio editing and sound design myself. One interviewee commented after listening: "I'm really impressed with how deeply you engaged with the story." Listen now.

Feminist City Author Leslie Kern on Envisioning More Equitable Urban Spaces

I guided the host of this series on structuring the episode and suggested questions that she didn't initially include, and I provided direction during recording. I also communicated our pre- and post-recording processes to the guest in writing (over email) and orally (over Zoom). I edited the audio of the episode, wrote the description and headline of the episode page, optimized the page, published it, and circulated it to internal stakeholders. Listen now.

How Boston Responded to the COVID-19 Crisis

Here again, I guided the host of this series on structuring the episode and suggested questions that she didn't initially include, and I provided direction during recording. I also communicated our pre- and post-recording processes to the guest in writing (over email) and orally (over Zoom). I edited the audio of the episode, wrote the description and headline of the episode page, optimized the page, published it, and circulated it to internal stakeholders. Listen now.
